“Trigger?” Stephen replied.

“For the secret passage,” Michael said. “Why else would there be a bookcase here?”

“To… hold books?” Stephen suggested.

“Look at this place,” Michael said. “Everything else is on the floor.”

“Well, maybe she’s trying to get things organized,” Stephen said. “Or maybe she just wanted something heavy to block the door.”

“I told you, the door’s not there,” Michael said.

He started pulling books at random off the shelf, tossing each one on the floor when it utterly failed to trigger the opening of a secret passageway.

“This is so pointless,” Stephen said, turning his back on the other man. “I can’t even watch you do this.”

“That’s probably the most helpful thing you could possibly do,” Michael said. The next book he reached for, he put a finger on top of the spine and tipped it towards him instead of pulling it straight out.

There was an audible click which made Stephen jump and whirl around.

“What the hell?” he asked.

“Aha!” Michael cried, jumping backwards as the bookcase swung outwards.

“She turned her door into a secret panel?” Stephen asked.

“I keep telling you, the door’s not there,” Michael said. “Look.”

The opening behind the bookcase was only slightly smaller than the case itself was… wider and shorter than the door outside the apartment had been. The space it opened into was cavernously dark.

“Power gone out in the building?” Stephen asked nervously. He was almost entirely certain that he wasn’t looking out into the hallway they’d been in earlier, but he clung to that thin sliver of doubt like it was a life preserver.

“Different building, my friend,” Michael said in an awed whisper. “Different city.”

“What, you don’t mean it’s some kind of… teleporter or something, do you?” Stephen asked.

“That is exactly what I don’t mean,” Michael said. “Want to see where it goes?”

“You’re enjoying this, aren’t you?” Stephen said, seeing his grin.

“Enjoying it?” Michael asked. “It’s what I signed up for.”

  1. Sorry for the missed updates, guys. I should never miss Tribe because it only takes half an hour to write… but that just makes it so tempting to push it back and read a blog or webcomic for just a few more minutes… and then a few more… and then a few more…

Another great update. I hope you can keep tribe regular, but regardless, it’s really good and worth anxiously waiting for the next release.

  3. Now I’m going to get in trouble at houses with bookcases…

We understand AE it happens to the best of us. Personally (and just last week), I should have been reading one of my textbooks (oh the woes of being a college student) looked at the clock (10 pm) and decided that I had time to procrastinate. Long story short the next time a looked at a clock (after watching a good ol’ Woody the Woodpecker cartoon on youtube) I saw that it was now 2 AM and I still had not read my text book (or the latest MUpdate). Needless to say, I read MU then went to bed. ;) But thanks for the tribe update…I’m super addicted to this too and I don’t feel as intimidated by the message boards as I do with the ever-popular MU.

  5. well, a lot of web comic authors will build up a backlog, in case they miss a couple days here and there.

Rein, if your in arizona, i can install one for you, and im doing it for cost of parts and word of mouth at the moment.

Urrr… I’m confused (and lazy). Which one is the guy that’s new to Tribe and which one is the veteran?

Khavren nailed it. I was just thinking how much Stephan and Nick were alike.
