Nick stared in disbelief at the sudden split in the tunnel. After all those turns, he just happened to come into sight of the first fork in the path at the very instant he thought to himself that there should be one? That was too much to be coincidence. It was too much to be believed. It was downright uncanny.
Was this bizarre hallway or tunnel or whatever responding to him? Was it, in some way, being created by him? If that was the case… then all he would have to do to find his Karrie Anne would be to…
No. It couldn’t be that simple. He shook his head, angry at himself for getting caught up in all this mumbo-jumbo. He was a grown up, an educated man… a lawyer, for Christ’s sake! He didn’t believe in magic mazes beneath the city that sprang from your imagination. The smart thing for him to do would be to turn around, follow the string back through the one lane labyrinth and call an ambulance for his daughter.
Yeah.
The smart thing.
He looked left. He looked right. He looked left. He thought he remembered reading once that people would most often turn in the direction of the hand they favored, unless they didn’t want to be found… then they’d go the “wrong” way to throw off pursuit.
Did Karrie want to be found, though?
And for that matter, was she even right-handed, or left?
Chances were she was right-handed, and chances were she would want to be found. If he was even remembering what he had read correctly, and if it was even true.
He decided to act under the assumption that he had remembered it, that it was true, that she was right handed, and she’d want him to find her. In any event, he certainly didn’t know otherwise… so… it should work, right?
That’s it, Nicky boy, he thought to himself. Drink the nice man’s Kool-Aid, and it’ll all be over soon.

Sounds like Nick is starting to understand how Woe’s life works. The question is, will he be able to handle finding out he was (or wasn’t) right in understanding. I love the world this is based in. It seems so bizarre, yet it makes so much sense.
I’m just wondering how Nick wouldn’t know whether his DAUGHTER is right-handed or not. Something’s definitely up here.
I think the reason Nick doesn’t know whether his daughter is right- or left-handed could be an indication of a reason she left in the first place: he probably didn’t give her enough attention, since he’s so focused on his job. Look at how many times he’s referred to his job in past entries (episodes?).
Heheheheh. “Drink the nice man’s Kool-Aid, and it’ll all be over soon.” What a great line.

You know, I’m going to be fascinated to find out his daughter’s viewpoint on all of this. It probably bears no relation to his at all.
Well, I think I’m going to really enjoy Tribe. I just stepped over from ToMU, and I can’t believe I didn’t stay around the first time I poked in here.
I think that Nick needs to think about this path the same way he thought about the Tribe’s van, the type of logic a child would have, or someone who hasn’t drunk society’s kool-aid about how the world works.
It’s a very interesting logic. It’s like that infamous cat. Is his daughter alive, or is she dead? The only way to know is to collapse the wave and see. Until then, she could still be alive.
@nobodez: But if she’s dead, wouldn’t that state have been observed by who/whatever killed her?
Also: Magic as a practical application of quantum mechanics could be the theme of some really god-awful MU fan fiction.
@AE: So now, I’m addicted to yet another thing you’re writing. If you get a chance, please do me and the world a favor and write something that sucks and post it somewhere just to prove you’re fallible. The idea that you’re writing these things within minutes of posting them online is reminding me of that “first drafts” scene from Amadeus.
I think if Nick had paid attention earlier he would have looked down to find some pebbles to throw when he reached the split.
… whoever heard that handedness thing is wrong.
Americans turn right. Japanese turn left. It has to do with roads and social conventions.
Except for the blasted brits. They turn right, left right, etc.
im glad i found this from MU… already hooked!

@Miako and @AE:
a) I am British.
b) I am right handed for most things but left for some with a sprinkling of ambidextrous for others.
c) I always turn left in mazes, etc., because I learned the left-hand-on-the-wall trick for solving (most) hedge mazes as a child. I also use this for computer games and so on. When trying to see everything in a building, I go left first.
